AFCIA News update and New Timeline
(Dated 23rd January 2021)
It has been quiet from our end since the new year; this is due to many reasons. We would like to share great news with you. European Commission has recently confirmed and signed an agreement with UNDP to contribute 10 million euro to the AFCIA UNDP grant funding window. We hope with this additional funding; we will be able to select and fund more grantees than planned (at least double) and also establish a central funding pool to provide technical assistance services to selected grantees and ecosystem enabler (this needs to be detailed out and designed) and potentially a central communication and marketing services to help you prompting your work to donor communities and public communities (like using a platform such as Tiktok or IG).
Thank you for your interest in the program; we have so far received close to 400 applications; this is a lot more than our initial plan (around 100). Luckily with the additional funding from the EC, we are in a good position to fund more grantees.
As mentioned to you all in the launch session, this is a learning journey for us as well; it is the first programme where UNDP will provide direct funding to local applicants globally. With the new donor, we are working hard to finalize a couple of things: 1. Establish a new project board; 2. Establish a new investment committee and set up the project management unit. These were planned but now with new funding, we need to adjust a few things. Therefore, we sincerely apologies that our timeline needs to be pushed back due to these changes. We want to be fully transparent to you, this process could take a bit of time. We expect the new timeline to be: January – finishing new donor funding agreement and gain internal approval; establish new project board and investment committee by February; select and shortlist potential grantees (which need investment committee approval) by March; sign the grant agreement with final grantees and disburse funding by April. This is about a two months delay minimum. In the meantime, we are currently reviewing all the proposals in the system so that we can get to the next step faster (reviewed 120 so far).
We ask for your patience as we are also learning through this program (such as legal agreement, safeguard requirement for local entities). Recently we have announced our commitment to support locally-led adaptation in both the Gobeshona Global Conference for locally-led action and Climate Adaptation Summit. We want to set up all the necessary infrastructure for the project correctly so we can provide continuous support to your great work (beyond this program).
