Scaling up ocean action based on science and innovation for the implementation of Goal 14: stocktaking, partnerships, and solution.

The second UN Ocean Conference comes at a critical time as the world is seeking to address many of the deep-rooted problems exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • To mobilize action, the conference seeks much needed science-based innovative solutions.
  • Solutions for a sustainably managed ocean involve green technology and innovative uses of marine resources using integrated, ecosystem-based approaches. They include addressing the main threats to the health, ecology and economy of the ocean – climate change,  pollution, unsustainable fishing, invasive species and the loss of marine habitats and biodiversity.  Each of these threats is ultimately rooted in weak ocean governance at various geographic scales.
  • Exploring interlinkages between SDG 13 on climate and SDG 14 on the ocean  in advancing the 2030 Agenda and Paris Agreement.
