This report presents an in-depth analysis of the Maldivian papaya value chain undertaken under the Scaling up Climate Ambition on Land Use and Agriculture through NAPs and NDCs – Private Sector Engagement Facility (SCALA-PSEF). It explores opportunities to strengthen climate resilience in agriculture while unlocking private sector investment. Drawing on extensive field research in key production areas—Thoddoo, Laamu Atoll, and Maafahi Island—the study assesses current production practices, market dynamics, and the potential uptake of the Maldives Good Agricultural Practices (MGAP) certification alongside other sustainable farming approaches. The analysis identifies practical pathways to improve productivity, sustainability, and profitability across the papaya sector. Its findings offer strategic recommendations to enhance farmer livelihoods, build agricultural resilience to climate impacts, and reduce the Maldives’ reliance on imported produce.
