Through the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF), Meteo Rwanda, in partnership with UNDP has successfully upgraded three Global Basic Observing Network (GBON) weather stations in Karongi, Nyagatare, and Ngoma.

Before this investment, Rwanda had just five synoptic stations feeding data to the Global Telecommunication System (GTS), with only Kigali International Airport reporting 24/7. The rest operated for just 12 hours a day.

These upgraded stations now feature advanced sensors, data loggers, and automation software, delivering high-quality hourly observations of rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind, and pressure—essential for accurate local and global weather forecasts.

The project also strengthened Meteo Rwanda’s staff capacity through training in observations, data collection, and maintenance of automatic weather stations.

Thanks to SOFF, WMO & UNDP for making this milestone possible and for advancing Rwanda’s climate resilience.
